Phantom Thread
Our Chairman, Mr. George Glasgow Sr is proud to have played a small part in the 2018 film, Phantom Thread. The whole team at George Cleverley have a great amount of respect for the artisanal work of Sir Daniel Day-Lewis & Mr. Paul Thomas Anderson, so it was an absolute pleasure to be included in this special film.
Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Sir Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
Mr. George Glasgow Sr’s character in Phantom Thread is called “Nigel Cheddar-Goode”.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL FEATURE BY JACOB GALLAGHER
WHEN COSTUME DESIGNER Mark Bridges began working on “Phantom Thread,” director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, about a fictional 1950s British couturier, he needed to brush up on London’s haberdashery heritage. Fortunately, Mr. Bridges had an eager tour guide at his disposal: the film’s star Daniel Day-Lewis. “Daniel knew this world, he knew where to go,” said Mr. Bridges, when we spoke a few weeks before the film’s Dec. 25 release, “We were picking shoes at George Cleverley, going hat shopping, looking for pajamas, it was just really fun.”
